Oxford County Business Success Stories:
Jakeman's Maple Syrup
Recognized in 2004 as Canada’s Best Tasting Maple Syrup by the National Post, Jakeman’s Maple Products is world-famous for their quality, taste, and innovation. It markets and sells its syrup and products in airport shops, general travel retail, gift and gourmet, and specialty food stores worldwide. Jakeman’s even sells to Walt Disney World.
The Jakeman family emigrated from Oxfordshire, England in 1876 and settled here in Oxford County that first year. Bob Jakeman explains the history of the family business:
“Maple syrup was the only source of sugar for early Canadian households, so like everyone they gathered the maple sap that first spring and made their own. We have made maple syrup every year since.”
Bob & Mary are the 4th generation of the Jakeman maple syrup-making legacy, and 2 of the 5th generation children also work in the family business.
Jakeman’s location just off the 401 & 403 highways, between Buffalo and Detroit, and Toronto and Montreal, makes transportation and logistics simple and cost effective. In the words of Bob Jakeman;
“This gave us easy access to the rest of Canada, the US, and major ocean ports and a host of Government and business networking activities.”
The company also enjoys ready access to supplies of maple syrup from other producers and other Ontario production centres. Being close to other producers also allows the company to supplement its marketing efforts by pooling with other producers to evolve and expand the reach of its marketing initiatives.
